REGISTER FOR A ROLE:
Register with the troop (to come on outings) – choose Troop Committee Member if you are unsure of your role
ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER (ASM):
If you love camping or have good outdoor skills, you may wish to become an Assistant Scoutmaster. This role requires training, and all ASMs need to demonstrate they are there for the whole troop, not just their own kids. If you are interested in this role, but don’t have a camping background, we can teach you the skills you need! We especially need female ASMs, since we need a female chaperone on all outings. Please talk to the Scoutmaster (Amber Ackerman) or the Troop Committee Chair (Lewis Cartee) about the role that would be best for you!
Training requirements:
- Youth Protection (YPT) training (online only)
- Hazardous Weather Training (online only)
- Scoutmaster Specific Training course (in-person or online)
- Introduction to Outodoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course (in-person only)
TROOP COMMITTEE MEMBER:
Troop Committee members are also essential to the troop: they are the support structure that allows us to operate. Roles include fundraising, membership/recruitment, helping with boards of Review, communications, research, and paperwork. Lewis Cartee is our Committee Chair, and he can help you find a role that fits your talents and time. Please talk to the Scoutmaster (Amber Ackerman) or the Troop Committee Chair (Lewis Cartee) about the role that would be best for you!
Training requirements:
- Youth Protection (YPT) training (online only)
- Committee Member Specific Training course (in-person or online)
ALL ADULTS IN THE TROOP:
Q: Do parents need to attend meetings?
A: No, parents do not need to attend meetings, unless you are an Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM), a chaperone for an upcoming outing, or if we have called a parent meeting.
Q: Do parents need to attend campouts?
A: No, usually the only chaperones on trips are our trained Scoutmasters. Occasionally, we open trips to Troop Committee members, or need an extra chaperone. Everyone who attends overnights needs to be registered with the Troop.
Q:How can I support my Scout?
-To earn Scout rank, and again at Star rank, parents need to read the Youth Protection guide at the front of their Scout’s Handbook, and discuss the questions at the back with your Scout. They cannot earn these ranks without this step!
-Do not sign advancement requirements for your Scout. Sign-offs are done by 1st Class, Star, Life, and Eagle Scouts, or by ASMs who are not the parent.
– Do remind your Scout to bring their Handbook to meetings.
– New Scouts will learn how advancement works from their patrols and the troop leaders. Some Scouts will advance quickly, others may take more time. It is OK for Scouts to go at their own pace. Let them ask questions, take their time, and enjoy the journey!
– Please communicate with the Scoutmaster (Amber Ackerman) if there are things we need to know for your Scout to be successful. We can work with a wide variety of personalities if we know what is helpful.
-Please help your Scout to RSVP for outings. That happens on the BAND calendar, and outings may have different RSVP cut-off dates.
– Please pay for outings promptly. Our Treasurer, Chris Krauth , posts payments due in Scoutbook. You can pay in Scoutbook using PayPal, get a check to Chris, or make other arrangements if necessary. If you need financial assistance, please talk to Chris, Lewis, or myself. We want all Scouts to be able to participate in all Troop events.
WHO HAS WHAT ROLE RIGHT NOW?
We will attempt to keep the link to who has what role now, and where the troop currently needs adult help, as updated as possible!
