Seabase – Keys Adventure – Packing List

Wear

  • Class A Uniform (green pants/shorts/skort with tan shirt)
  • Shoes (can be shoes mentioned on packing list below, or just any comfortable shoes)

Turn in to group Gear Bag for checking at airport (put in a bag and label)

  • 16oz +45 Biodegradable sunscreen REEF SAFE (no aerosols)
  • Non aerosol bug spray
  • Oil-based skin product for no-seeums repellent (i.e., Skin-So-Soft)

Clothes to Pack

there are free laundry facilities – with driers and detergent provided

scouts will have the opportunity to buy a souvenir t-shirt if they want an extra t-shirt

  • Light fleece that can get wet (good when chilly/on boat/in rain).
  • 2 x swimsuit (we will be basically living in swimsuits)
  • 4 x underwear
  • 3 x pairs of socks (1 x long-ish for buggy island)
  • 1 x bra
  • 2 x shorts/skorts for dry activities
  • 1 x long pants for dry activities (for sunburn/bugs)
  • 1 x long pants for wet activities – e.g. quick dry leggings/pants (for sunburn)
  • 1 x swim shorts (for comfort – e.g. cheap athletic shorts)
  • 1 x UPF +30 long sleeve swim shirt
  • 1 x long-sleeve troop swim shirt (this is also uniform for flags)
  • 1 x Luau Shirt (this is uniform for last night)
  • 1 x casual shirt that doesn’t identify us as scouts for Key West
  • 1 x troop 29 t-shirt
  • 1 x shirt with skincoverage (e.g. quickdry hoodie) for buggy island
  • 1 x pajamas (optional)

Gear to pack

  • Hiking sandals (e.g. Chacos/Tevas/Keens)
    • worn 90% of time, including as shower shoes
  • Closed toe, hard soled, water shoes
    • should be good for wading in waist-deep water with slippery rocks and knee-deep sticky mud. Best is hard-soled dive-booties
  • Wide-mouth water bottle with carabiner – clipped on daypack
  • Quart ziplock bag with:
    • mini toothpaste
    • mini showergel
    • mini shampoo
    • mini conditioner
    • Mini shave foam/cream (optional)
    • Mini mouthwash (optional)
  • Small toiletry bag with:
    • meds
    • Toothbrush
    • floss
    • brush/comb
    • hair ties
    • Solid deodorant
    • body glide stick or gold bond powder (optional)
    • Razor (optional)
    • Ear plugs (optional)
  • Polarized Sunglasses with strap
  • Wide brimmed hat with strap (boats go fast)
  • Neck Gaiter/Buff (for sun & bug protection) 
  • Rain jacket (also good windbreaker on fast boats)
  • Flashlight that has a red option for turtles
  • Spending money ($150-$200 – greenlight card etc)
  • Book 
  • Emergency period things
  • String bag to carry items to/from shower
  • Lightweight sleeping bag
  • Small pillow
  • 2 towels (lightweight)
  • Mask & Snorkel 
  • Dirty laundry bag
  • Small waterproof dry-bag to take on boats, for camera/first aid/sunblock (optional)

  • Thermal cover for water bottle to keep water cold (optional)
  • Face net for buggy island (optional)
  • Sheet for twin mattress in dorm (optional – mattresses have wipeable plastic covers)
  • Backpacking sleeping pad / air mattress (optional – for the one camping night)
  • Hammock (optional – only space for 1-2 hammocks during the one camping night)
  • Tag or small identifying item for the mesh bag that comes with the seabase flippers (optional)

Adults-only Gear:

  • Phone with charging cable and plug
  • charged brick/battery-pack to charge phone when off base
  • Cover to be able to take phone underwater
  • Some wooden clothespins
  • Combination lock (1 per crew of 6-8)
  • Snorkel-mask defogging-spray
  • Crew First-aid kit specific to our adventure (1 per crew of 6-8)
  • Med forms ABC for everyone in the crew of 6-8
    • (with dr signature, dr note for recent musculoskeletal injuries, date for tetanus shot, signature that over-the-counter meds can be given, etc)
  • Other paperwork for everyone in the crew of 6-8
    • (fishing licenses for all age 16+ and all adult training certificates)

For one-night camping on the island (each person will be given a large dry-bag to pack):

Note, everything below is already on the packing list (take adult first aid kit everywhere)

Wear:

  • a wet outfit (swimsuit, wet-activity long pants, swim shirt, hat, sunglasses)
  • closed-toe hard-soled water shoes for wading to island

Keep with you:

  • mesh flipper/snorkel bag (with all snorkel gear)
  • water bottle, sunblock, camera, fishing license for 16+ (maybe in a small drybag)

Pack the following in the large (provided) dry-bag (you won’t see dry-bag all day):

  • High coverage shirt for buggy island
  • Long dry-activity pants for buggy island
  • Long-ish socks for buggy island
