What to Wear?

The Official Scouts BSA Field Uniform (formerly known as Class A) Shirt is the expected attire at Troop Meetings (September – May). The official pants are not required. Jeans are an appropriate subtitute. A Scout belt and socks are also encouraged. Athletic wear is not acceptable at times when official uniforms are to be worn. A neckerchief/slide will be presented by the Troop when the scout joins.

Scouts will wear the Activity Uniform (Class B) Troop 29 t-shirt to meetings during the Summer months (June – August) and these may be worn for certain outdoor and other activities as appropriate. Class B shirts will be provided to new Scouts after payment of their initial activity fee.

What to Bring?

A Scout’s handbook is the road map for their scouting travels. It lists all the requirements for each rank, provides a great deal of information about the skills learned for each requirement and has pages for recording completion of each requirement. Scouts are expected to bring the Scout Handbook to every meeting/activity.

What happens?

Meetings are planned in advance by the Patrol Leaders Council (PLC). The PLC consists of the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, and the Patrol Leaders.

The meeting is led by the Senior Patrol Leader with help from the other PLC members. The Scoutmaster and the Assistant Scoutmasters provide mentoring and safety guard rails, with the Scoutmaster opening or closing the meeting with any important announcements. Sometimes the troop works on activities as a large group, and other times the scouts break into smaller groups called patrols. Each patrol has its own patrol leader and assistant patrol leader who facilitate the small group activities. When the scouts camp, each patrol cooks their own meals.

Weekly meetings can focus on many things: (i) experienced scouts teaching the troop new skills (e.g. dutch oven cooking/cleaning or putting up troop tents); (ii) planning for an upcoming camping trip (planning meals/tenting/dishwashing etc); (iii) learning about a skill needed for upcoming camping trip (how to pack for a backpacking trip, how to be safe when caving); (iv) working on a merit badge as a troop or as a small group; (v) working on skills for advancement (e.g. knot tying/knife skills/orienteering skills); (vi) getting scout handbook signed by experienced scouts or trained assistant scoutmasters (ASMs) when skills for advancement have been demonstrated; (vii) and much more…..Typically there will be both large group and small group activities.

Fun and Games are a vital part of any meeting!!!!!!

Board of Review

Boards of review can be scheduled by scouts for during the regular weekly meeting. The board of review is the last step in advancing from one rank to the next, and can be scheduled after a scoutmaster conference has been completed. See the Rank Advancement tab for more information on rank advancement.

Court of Honor

Several times a year, the weekly meeting becomes a Court of Honor. This is an awards celebration dinner to celebrate all the rank adancements earned and all the merit badges earned since the last Court of Honor. Typically families attend to celebrate their scouts achievements, and typically everyone brings a side dish for 8-10 people to accompany the food that has been provided. Sometimes the scouts decide on a theme for these side dishes!
